LOUDNESS WAR
04-09-2016

Loudness War is a live sound performance based on a confrontation between the noise of an airplane and a techno track generated in real time from the aircraft’s own sound.

As the airplane moves through the surrounding acoustic space, its noise becomes the source material for an evolving rhythmic composition. The two sonic presences — the physical sound of the aircraft and its musical transformation — coexist and progressively compete in intensity, creating a shifting relationship between environmental noise, rhythm and amplification.

The work takes its title from the “loudness war”, the recording industry's tendency to increase perceived volume through dynamic compression. Here, the idea shifts into a physical environment, where mechanical noise and electronic music confront one another in real time.
